Devotional Prose

Some mornings you wake up, some nights you lie awake, and you peel back the layers of everything. You go through every feeling and thought and you wonder what went wrong: Was there something that you missed? Was there something that was said? When you heard the word, “forever,” was that not what it truly meant?

You wonder if all along, the ground was breaking beneath you, and if you had been blindsided, or if you were merely lied to. Or maybe...it was both? And that’s why none of this makes sense… because what you were told was supposed to be a promise. It was not meant to end like this.

And at times you felt like Joseph, stripped of the coat of dreams, tossed out in the darkness, captured without knowledge of where this might be going. But like Joseph you will find, when things are out of your control, your God will keep you whole.

Even in a prison of thoughts, He will set you free, in Jesus’ Name. You will never be the same. And though things may never be the way they used to be, as long as you are with Him you will have what you need and in the end you will find that was glorious, beautiful, everything.⠀

There will be years that go by, and the one that hurt you might go on with his life but God will keep you and make things right, and though it is hard to see now you will see it in time. For this has been where He was leading you all along: high above your hurt and lowly history, and into brand new mercies and a journey, with Him.

When it hurts so much, He is doing new things. Though it takes time to see, He will give you peace, and courage to trust and believe, in your lowest place, you’ll go higher with Him, over everything.

When you look back on your hardest times know that you still have purpose. And like Joseph, you will find, even after all the longest, most tiresome years, you can boldly and truthfully say, it was God who brought you here. - Morgan Harper Nichols

Devotional poem

Some mornings you wake up,

some nights you lie awake,

and you peel back the layers of everything.

You go through every feeling and thought

and you wonder what went wrong:

Was there something that you missed?

Was there something that was said?

When you heard the word, “forever,”

was that not what it truly meant?

You wonder if all along,

the ground was breaking beneath you,

and if you had been blindsided,

or if you were merely lied to.

Or maybe...it was both?

And that’s why none of this makes sense...

because what you were told

was supposed to be a promise.

It was not supposed to end like this.

And at times you felt like Joseph,

stripped of the coat of dreams,

tossed out in the darkness,

captured without knowledge

of where this might be going.

But like Joseph you will find,

when things are out of your control,

your God will keep you whole.

Even in a prison of thoughts,

He will set you free, in Jesus’ Name.

You will never be the same.

And though things may never be

the way they used to be,

as long as you are with Him

you will have what you need

and in the end you will find

that was glorious, beautiful, everything.

—Morgan Harper Nichols

There will be years that go by,

and the one that hurt you

might go on with his life

but God will keep you

and make things right,

and though it is hard to see now

you will see it in time.

For this has been

where He was leading you all along:

high above your hurt and lowly history,

and into brand new mercies

and a journey, with Him.

When it hurts so much,

He is doing new things.

Though it takes time to see,

He will give you peace

to trust and believe,

in your lowest place,

you will go higher

with Him, over everything.

When you look back

on your hardest times

know that you still have purpose.

And like Joseph, you will find,

even after all the longest,

most tiresome years,

you can boldly and truthfully say,

it was God who brought you here.

I wrote (and sent) these words to the girl whose relationship ended because he left her for someone else. It’s hard to make sense of it, but I hoped these words would encourage her where she is right now and anyone else who can relate, because dear friend, you are not alone.

Sincerely, Morgan Harper Nichols

Though the weight of the world tries to pull her into its bottomless sea,

Even in the depth of sleepless nights,
He makes her burdens light.
He keeps her breathing.
He keeps her from sinking.

Even in the morning,
in the aftermath of chaos,
by His grace
she finds sweet rest
in His Presence.

Day by day,
she is learning
to see Him in everything,
and it is changing her life
for good.

Though the weight of the world
tries to pull her
into its bottomless sea,
His Love is the raft
that keeps her from sinking.

Wave after wave,
He steadies her soul.
Wave after wave,
He makes her whole.

This is her hope when it feels all too heavy:
when she has to act like nothing happened,
standing in the same room with the one
who broke her heart,
and when she is telling herself not to worry
about the most pressing things in her life,
but she is running out of time,
it is only the love of Jesus
that is keeping her from sinking.
It is only His peace
giving her clarity
deep into the night.

So in this moment,
she inhales and exhales.
Ever trusting of His Power
even in the final hour,
even when she cannot see
and she is certain she is sinking,
she knows He is faithful.
He will keep her from drowning.

For He rescued us
from the domain of darkness,
and transferred us
to the kingdom
of His beloved Son.
- Colossians 1:3

- These words were inspired by a message I sent to someone today who simply replied to something on the Instagram story. I felt let to share these words with her, and I added a bit more here, just for anyone else who might be dealing with sinking feelings today. Sincerely, @morganharpernichols

As rain water finds its way down the mountain, so does His Love find its way to her heart.

As rain water finds its way
down the mountain
so does His Love
find its way to her heart.
Through the ridges and shoulders
nothing hinders Living Water
from flooding the desert of her mind,
reminding her of this:
while she waits for answers,
her heart is held,
her prayers her heard
and her life is in the hands
of her Father who loves her.
-Morgan Harper Nichols

If anxiety has consumed your mind lately,

If anxiety
has consumed your mind lately,
take heart,
knowing there will be a day
when you look back
on this time of your life,
and realize that all along,
you were guided.
All along, God was leading your heart
through the valley
and into the safety
of His loving arms,
and through every year and every season,
He will do that again and again.
-Morgan Harper Nichols

For now that you have found Living Water

For all you have been through, you have come so far. And to be able to talk about these valleys you tread through, and how you learned to see the Light in the process is a truly beautiful thing. May you be able to continue to take this day by day. There is a lot of pressure on you right now, but by grace, with strength, you will make it. You will. May you wake up each morning and go to bed each night knowing that even here, there is more ahead. Even here, Living Water flows from the stream and there is still a chance to be alive here.  For now that you have found Living Water, your soul can find rest in the beautiful truth that you are still growing and your journey is not over yet. Sincerely, Morgan Harper Nichols

For Light has interrupted her own personal darkness

Never again will broken love tear away at the layers of her grace-woven heart. For Light has interrupted her own personal darkness and tied back together what had been torn apart . And living, breathing, she is stronger than ever, as mercy burns gold through her hair and her skin and now she finds the freedom to move on, a purpose and a hope to start again.
